Playgrounds of power - Motherhood

“Playgrounds of Power – Motherhood" (2022) is a project dealing with women’s fears and uncertainties regarding pregnancy and the early stages of motherhood. With a poetic approach, I aim to present a variety of notions and impressions within the topic, showing the complexity and depth of these experiences. Juxtaposing the grimness of the flesh with the joy of a new life, my goal is to subtly raise questions on the social subjugation of women and the judgement they face but also show the stability one can find within themselves and their loved ones during and after pregnancy.

Growing up in a household where feminine energies were most influential, then later realising how much the world is male dominated has left me in dismay. Ever since feminism and the empowerment of women are crucial matters in my life. These days the fear of motherhood and the feeling of being constrained either by laws or societal pressure were important topics among my close friends which made me want to tackle the issue. However, the catalyst for the project was my sister. As I was focused on the restrictions and criticism that women who do not want to have children face, her pregnancy presented a new perspective. Her experience of being condemned for having children made me realise the convoluted nature of the issue. There is seemingly no solution for women being constantly reprimanded regardless of the choices they make. Still, I aim to subdue the temper regarding the subject, to shed light on women’s struggles from various perspectives and to point out the importance of women’s empowerment.
